Obama and Kenya

There is a worrisome thread that ties our election primaries with the election debacle in Kenya. The mainstream media seems content to avoid the connection. It is willing to allow the right-wing to sink its teeth into the story after Ted Kennedy crowns the winning Democrat with his laurel wreath. Why is that? Have we Americans become so provincial that we cannot make the effort that is necessary to fully investigate our candidates? Are we content to rely on revisionist autobiographies to make our decisions on their character and judgment?

We have heard part of the story of the Kenya election. The West has been shocked by the syndicated photos of the burnt church where 40-50 people, mostly women and children, fled to escape machete-armed mobs. The victims had gone to the church thinking it would be a safe haven only to have their former neighbors lock them inside and set the building ablaze. Unfortunately, the atrocities haven't stopped with that fire.

To its credit, the media has highlighted the marauders that have killed hundreds and the many displaced Kenyans who have left their homes to escape the violence. Recent accounts have also told the tragic stories of Kenyan women and Kenyan children as young as two, raped by gangs of thugs that hope their savage acts against defenseless human beings will disgrace their victims' families.

There is much more to the story of Kenya's election, however, a part of the story that has an American connection.  That part remains untold since the media seems content to allow the Republicans to connect the dots. This is the largely untold story, and I relate it here.

Raila Odinga, the opposition leader, who claims that President Mwai Kibaki rigged his election victory, is Barack Obama's cousin. In a story reported by the BBC, Obinga celebrated his connection to the presidential hopeful by sharing his familial tie. According to Odinga, Obama's father was indeed his uncle.

If the family connection was all, it is easily dismissed because many of us have relatives we would rather forget. Sadly, there is more to the story. Mr Odinga's Orange Movement and its dominant Luo tribe have caused much of the violence in Kenya. The victims of the violence have been for the most part the Kikuyu, the Kenyan President's tribe.

That is not all.  Odinga has a pact with the National Muslim Leaders' Forum, a hardcore Islamic organization that represents Kenya's Muslim minority. Odinga has promised Muslim leaders that he will establish Sharia courts throughout the country once elected. He has also promised to impose Muslim dress codes for women, prohibit the sale of pork and alcohol, and ban Christian preaching.

There is still more, and it takes us to the very crux of the matter.  In the late summer of 2006, Barack Obama visited Kenya and vocally supported Odinga and his presidential ambitions. There are pictures on the web showing the two together.  During that visit, the Kibaki government likened Obama to an Obinga "stooge," an unfortunate moniker for a presidential hopeful.

Why would Obama become involved in the internal politics of another country? What should Americans make of Obama's political endorsements and stumping for Odinga in Kenya? Surely, these incidents raise serious questions about Barack Obama's judgment and his understanding of international decision-making. Surely, Americans of whatever political persuasion should be concerned that Kenya, one of Africa's most prosperous, pro-Western states, is being threatened with the same fate as Somalia. Is this how Obama plans to work with other countries if he should win the presidency? This is a question that demands Barack Obama's answer.

In January of this year, our government asked Obama to urge Obinga to engage in bi-lateral talks to resolve Kenya's political crisis. At first, Obinga agreed to the talks. He has since dissed cousin Obama and rescinded his offer. So, why did Barack Obama risk his political capital on Odinga in August, 2006?

Re: Obama and Kenya (none / 0)

Correct the spelling. Is it "Odinga" or "Obinga"?
I think it is Odinga.

Re: Obama and Kenya (none / 0)

Sorry, it is Odinga. I tried to correct the typo but I don't seem able to correct the mistake.

MSM has not bothered to investigate  REZKOGATE in Chicago. Why would you think they would be interested in Kenya? Tweety and company are more interested in what is crawling up their leg than anything else!

Re: Obama and Kenya (none / 0)

I live in Chicago and a couple of reporters have grabbed on to the Rezko story. John Kass, a commentator for the Chicago Tribune, has suggested a musical based on Camelot called Obama's Lot. Hopefully the following will link you to his story; it's a hoot: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/colum nists/chi-kass_30jan30,0,7270029.

We will be hearing more about the Rezko fiasco in early March. Obama should never have pretended that he had a brief relationship with Rezko; the Republicans will easily show Obama has known Rezko for over 15 years.

Re: Obama and Kenya (none / 0)

Obama isn't the president yet. He's just a senator with ties to Kenya running for higher office. I would rather have him try and fail to make a difference than not try at all. None of the other candidates have really even acknowledged the looming civil war there.

What would you have preferred he do under the circumstances?

Re: Obama and Kenya (none / 0)

Since you are asking I'm responding, but please don't bite my head off if you disagree with my answer.

I personally would have preferred it if Obama had never become involved with Kenya's election. He was a State Senator involved in a US Senate race at the time and since that is my state let me assure you there were pressing things on the homefront with which he could have occupied himself. (Perhaps you have seen the CNN story on the many young promising Chicago students who have been gunned down on Chicago streets even though they weren't members of a gang or the stories about Illinois being financially in the red.)

You give Obama credit for getting involved. I believe the real test for involvement was when I voted for him to be my senator and he declared his candidacy for POTUS within his first term of office. He fails that test in my book.

More to the point, Kenya was none of Obama's business, and it was a foolish action on his part. Even more to the point, I don't like his cousin's pact with the Muslim minority that seeks to repress the citizenry or the fact that Odinga's followers have ruthlessly attacked their neighbors. (These people lived peacefully side by side for years.)

Since Obama backed Odinga, does he also back the repressive pact with the Muslims? Obama helped rally Odinga supporters. Since Odinga supporters have slaughtered innocent women and children, don't you see where his Kenyan alliances can come back to bite him?

You may be offended by this line of questioning and find it distasteful, but it is leditimate. You may not like it but unfortunately it is a fair line of questioning, because Obama backed Odinga. It is a fair, and it is one that the Republicans will soon be throwing Obama's way if he becomes the Democrat's nominee.

Re: Obama and Kenya (none / 0)

Oops, in regards to second paragraph beginning "I personally...", Obama was already a sitting US Senator when he went to Kenya. (Sorry for the error, I write this too late at night and should be in bed.) However, he was a sitting US Senator, so what was he thinking???

Re: Obama and Kenya (none / 0)

Obama made a mistake by getting involved in this because he sided with his cousin. His cousin supports islamic fundamentalists.

Re: Obama and Kenya (none / 0)

Yes Odinga has claimed that Obama is his cousin. We have recently discovered that Dick Cheney is also related to Obama on his mothers side. So what.

I have seen absolutely no evidence that Obama campaigned for any candidate in kenya or has made any statement supporting any side in Kenya. Yes Luo's claim him as a native son and make much of his position but Obama has never inserted himself into sectarian politics and none of your links to credible news sources say otherwise. Obama however has no control over the statements of Kenyan

He has called both sides and encouraged compromise and when in Kenya last he made a statement to the effect that corruption should be confronted for the good of the country (which is a position the US takes) which pissed off the government which up until then had been very positive about Obama.

The nonsense about Obama plotting with Odinga to establish Sharia law in Kenya comes from white supremacist web sites. Incredible that we are now having screeds direct from Free Republic and Aryan Nations being touted as credible here.

Re: So, why are hillary supporters promoting (none / 0)

Dear Scrooge,

Please look at Undies post below and try to help us connect the dots. (We are going to elect the POTUS not the President of the Senior Class.) As Americans we all support a free democratic society. Well look at what Obama's cousin supports before you get defensive and then try to realize what the right-wing will do with that same information.

Re: Obama and Kenya (none / 0)

Actually, the story is more about Obama's judgment. Why can't you see that? Also, please don't paint me with any White Supremist brush because if you could see me you would find I don't fit the bill.

Re: Obama and Kenya (none / 0)

And why would the positions and or misbehavior of any Kenyan politician from any of the Kenyan parties have anything to do with Obama?

Re: Obama and Kenya (none / 0)

I have been on this for weeks and am glad some others are also concerned about the Odinga situation.

Just a few days ago there was another story about the opposition gangs raping women of the other tribe...  it's more fodder for the RW...

More guilt by association bullshit.  That's all this is.  That's all the Rezko nonsense is.
